Green Culture Index Sachsen

As part of the Green Culture Index Saxony project, climate assessments were created for the participating cultural institutions for the first time, while knowledge about carbon accounting and reduction measures was developed. With the publication of the 2022 climate assessments, the foundational steps were taken to identify key areas for action, plan next steps, and ultimately evaluate progress.

Funded by the E.ON Foundation, the climate balances for 2022 were prepared to help institutions determine their carbon footprints and develop measures for reduction toward “net zero.” The project was led by the Aktionsnetzwerk Nachhaltigkeit in Kultur und Medien (Action Network Sustainability in Culture and Media), which calculated the balances according to ISO 14064 standards and the GHG Protocol.

Through a series of workshops, participants gained essential knowledge about carbon accounting, data collection, and deriving appropriate reduction measures. They also had the opportunity to learn from each other about relevant aspects and the structures needed for effective data gathering. The project enhances the data landscape regarding climate-relevant activities in cultural institutions, supports the development of reduction measures, and lays the groundwork for improved structural conditions. Its overarching goal was to build capacities, competencies, and structures for establishing “Green Culture” processes within the cultural sector.
